The Wilson Reading System

The Wilson Reading System directly and systematically teaches pupils how to fluently and accurately decode. It is unlike traditional phonics programmes in that instruction is very interactive and multisensory. It also teaches total word construction not just phonics. Students learn to encode (spell) as they learn to decode.

Evidence shows that when direct systematic code-based instruction is skilfully implemented by a knowledgeable teacher, it is the most effective approach for problem readers. (Moats and Lyon 1996)

The Wilson Reading System can be used to teach adults or children how to read and spell.

The program includes 12 student readers which contain word lists, nonsense words, sentences and stories. The pupils also use a Wilson Notebook in which they collect drills/information which serve as reminders as they read.
